ARGOS

ARGOS drawings feature image of mass produced objects from ARGOS catalogues. And Hyemin Park reproduces ARGOS catalogues with her own drawings. Therefore, audiences can take ARGOS catalogues free during the exhibition. The catalogue displays a list of art works stored at reception. Each individual piece is going be sold for the exactly same price of the object drawn. The audience is invited to purchase any pieces they want immediately at the reception. On the exhibition, ARGOS drawings are not displayed but stored at reception so that audiences are not allowed to see the actual work until they buy the piece.

Hyemin Park’s work of art is always an attempt to communicate with the public, as she believes that her art is completed when the audience takes part in it.
Since the interaction between the artist and the audience takes a crucial part in her work, the Argos Project specifically requires the viewers’ action to finalize the work. Hyemin had drawn the image of products from Argos catalogues, including the price labels as they are printed on the catalogue. The audience can make orders after having a look at the catalogues as they do it in the store. What they purchase at this virtual Argos store is not commodities but art.
The uniqueness of the project is that there is no display of art works. The artist sits in front of the Argos sign, where you can find catalogues on the desk. This setting is borrowed from the popular commodity store’s concept, and the artist selling the drawings at the same price as the products is Hyemin Park’s strategy of sharing and suggesting art to public. It is about how the value of art is decided in a relation to culture of mass consumption, also the communication between the artist and the audience.
The behaviour of buying art and buying commodities are easily thought to be happening in different sides of the world, which is a fixed idea the artist plays with. Through Hyemin’s selling performance, audience who buy products from the virtual commodities store acquire the position of art collector and participate in contemporary art scene spontaneously.
