She's back, 2005
<She’s Back> is a series of photos and a performance video project that Hyemin created in her last year of the university in Korea. It is consisted of borrowing sentences from famous speeches of all the past presidents of the university. Ehwa university is one of the largest female educational institute and shares 120 years of history which contains political situation in Korea as well as feminism and missionary action of western religion Christianity. She used satire in the contradictory speech to illustrate the current and historical issues through her work. She delivered a contradictory speech in the university assembly hall.

Text of a Speech
In a time when we are suffering from serious chronic youth unemployment, what do you do? Do you know the way to go? Today, we know that Ehwa is God’s amazing manifestation as well as crystal of prayer and love throughout the world. You are the person who is innocent, noble and blessed, because of the fact that you are following his word which is ‘I am the way and the truth and the life’ as an Ehwa womans university student. Through the lessons of Jesus, there is no question that Ehwa womans university students should be absolutely perfect Koreans.
As a blessed Ehwa person, you should absolutely prepare the things follow. In this emergency situation, the Christian women should know the critical juncture of the nation. We should make important contributions to freedom and civilization of women. Therefore we should offer many opportunities to educate women for examples; we should learn how to cut, sew and fix our clothes and how to tidy our house. We should manage our family chores reasonably for the elevation of the women’s social status. Reasonable and scientific housework resulted in a radical reform of women’s awareness.
Moreover, you should be in a triangular position as an intellectual woman who is based on humanity, therefore able to be a historical mother who can take care of ‘a national scar’. Through women’s potential ability, we should be free from house chores, and moreover, we should support the long-looked-for ‘day of conscription’ as driving out ‘the white enemy’. Therefore finally we should become a rearguard unit which can solace our family from the pain.
Now do you have Ehwa’s historical sprit? Are you ready to fight for the nation? Even if people don’t let you study, do you have an enterprising sprit to go out and find education? You should follow God’s path, guarantee our national rights. Not disappointing expectations, we do our best for our country. In addition, we should break the long-established custom, therefore finally find your own level as a new cultural pioneer. Sublime Ehwa’s sacrifice spreads out not only the nation but also all over the world like the summer melts the ice.
Here is the victory. You are here following the agency of providence. Therefore it is definitely true that Ehwa’s future will be blessed. The garden of Ehwa is for you. We are the princesses who live in this new palace.

그녀가 돌아왔다, 2005
<그녀가 돌아왔다>(2005)는 학부 졸업을 앞둔 작가가, 본인을 둘러싼 소위 “이대생”에 대한 여러 담론에 직접 마주하는 퍼포먼스 작업이다. <그녀가 돌아왔다>(2005)는 역대 이화여자대학교 총장들의 연설들의 문장들을 인용하여 새롭게 만들어진 한편의 연설문으로, 작가가 이화여자대학교 중강당에서 낭독하고 전시한 퍼포먼스/사진 작업이다. 이 작업은 인용되고 재편집된 문장들로 이화여자대학교의 역사와 그 단면단면을 희화화하며 폭로한다.

50만 청년실업에 육박한 이 심각한 시기에 당신은 무엇을 하고 있는가? 당신은 이화가 나아가야하는 길을 알고 있는가? 오늘날의 이화는 주님의 창조물일 뿐만 아니라, 전 세계인의 기도와 사랑의 결정체이다. 당신은 이화의 학생으로서 ‘나는 길이요, 진리요, 생명’이라고 하신 그리스도의 복음 위에 서있는 순결하고 고귀한, 축복받은 여성이다. 이화의 학생들은 그리스도와 그 교훈을 통하여 완전무결한 한국인이 되어야하는 당위성을 가지고 있는 것이다.
축복받은 이화 인으로서, 당신을 다음 몇 가지에 대해서는 철저하게 준비되어야한다. 음식을 만들고 옷을 재단, 재봉, 수선하는 것, 그리고 자신과 집안을 청결하고 말끔하게 정돈할 수 있어야 한다. 우리가 이렇게 창조적이고 합리적 가사활동에 철저히 준비되어 있을 때 우리의 지위는 향상 될 것이다.
뿐만 아니라 더 나아가 지성과 인간애를 바탕으로 능력 있는 여성으로 정립되고, 민족의 상흔을 어루만질 수 있는 역사적인 어머니로 이화지성이 되어야 한다. 당신은 묻어있던 여성의 능력을 바탕으로 완전한 해방을 하여야 하며, 그러한 완전한 해방 속에서 제일선 장병과 보조를 같이하고, 도의를 무시한 물질제일주의의 서양문명을 박차고 동아의 천지로부터 미영을 격퇴하여, 헐벗은 형제의 고통을 위로하는 유력한 여성 부대가 되어야 한다.
지금 당신들은 과거 선배들이 가졌던 것과 똑같은 헌신적 정신을 가지고 있는가, 침식조차 잊고 학교로 나아가서는 국가를 위해 싸웠던 것과 같은 정성이 있는가? 집에서 안보내주면 도망을 와서까지 배우는 기풍을 지니고 있는가? 적어도 당신은 하나님의 거룩한 말씀 속에 거하면서, 여성의 인간화를 통해 전체 인간 해방을 지향하고, 이웃과 조국을 섬기며, 인간의 평화적 공동체 실현을 위해 헌신하여, 거룩하고도 거룩한 이화정신을 저 멀리 언 땅과 그늘진 곳에 까지 펼쳐야 한다.
승전의 길은 이화 안에 있다. 당신이 이화에 거하게 됨은 그 어떤 섭리의 주재함이며, 그로서 당신의 미래는 축복받아야 할 당위이다. 이화는 당신에게 천국이며 궁전이다. 우리는 이 시대의 새로운 궁전 안에 사는 진정한 공주로 거듭나야 한다.
